Scoil Mhuire Naofa has a coeducational ASD Centre. It caters for children with Autism, and the aim is to assist the children to develop socially and educationally to the maximum of their potential, in a stimulating and relaxed environment. A variety of teaching methods are used to facilitate the children in our care, with A.B.A., T.E.A.C.H., and P.E.C.S used in the classroom. Our school has 2 coeducational ASD classes.

Our ASD Centre has a pupil teacher ratio of 6:1. The pupils are further supported by 2 Inclusion Support Assistants (SNAs) per class. Our staff are highly trained and experienced.

A classroom comprises of

  • a central activities area
  • individual learning stations
  • quiet zone
  • multi sensory equipment
  • toilets
  • changing area
  • outdoor play area
  • ICT resources

The children have full access to all areas of the school, and are integrated with their mainstream class group each day. In the mainstream classroom the children participate in activities such as Aistear, drama productions, Physical Education, science, and more, according to their Individual Education Plan.

Our school promotes inclusion. We practise reverse integration where small groups of children from mainstream classes join the children in special classes for certain curricular activities. We also practise integration where the children from the special classes join a mainstream class. All the children play together in the yard with extra supervision by teachers and Inclusion Support Assisstants.

We are currently awaiting a new state of the art, purpose built school. The Department of Education and Skills has advised us that this will be ready in July 2023.

For further information on our Centre, please contact the school by either phone or email.
