Scoil Mhuire Naofa has a coeducational ASD Centre which caters for children with Autism. The aim of the Centre is to assist each child to develop socially and educationally to the maximum of their potential, in a stimulating and relaxed environment. A variety of teaching methods are used to facilitate the children in our care, with A.B.A., T.E.A.C.H., and P.E.C.S. used in the classroom.

We currently have one class with 6 children. Our ASD Centre has a pupil teacher ratio of 6:1. The pupils are further supported by 2 Special Needs Assistants per class. Our staff are highly trained and experienced.

The classroom comprises of

  • a central activities area
  • individual learning stations
  • quiet zone
  • multi-sensory equipment
  • toilets
  • changing area
  • outdoor play area
  • ICT resources

The children have full access to all areas of the school, and are integrated with their mainstream class group. In the mainstream classroom the children participate in activities such as Aistear, drama productions, Physical Education, science and more, according to their Individual Education Plans.

Our school promotes inclusion. We practise reverse integration where small groups of children from mainstream classes join the children in special classes for certain curricular activities. We also practise integration where the children from the special classes join a mainstream class. All the children play together in the yard with extra supervision by teachers and Inclusion Support Assistants.

We are currently awaiting a new, state of the art, purpose built school. The Department of Education and Skills has advised us that this will be ready in 2021.

For further information on our Centre, please contact the school by either phone or email.
